In May 2023, I visited Korea to commemorate the 10th anniversary of my father’s passing and the first anniversary of my mother’s. During that time, I was able to meet with Missionaries Yoon and Yang, whom I have known for a long time, and we went for a drive together. On the way to and from Ganghwa Island, I stopped by Daemyeong Port, where I captured a quiet moment of a boat resting after coming ashore. I later turned that photograph into a sketch.

Each line drawn carries the tremor of the wind, the rhythm of the waves, and the quiet resonance within. The boat’s name, “성복” stands out not just as a label but as a symbol—perhaps of a life that has paused, anchored, and found a moment of peace.
Photography centers on what is seen; sketching centers on what is felt. A photo speaks in light and color, while a sketch speaks in lines and silence. This particular sketch, drawn on lined notebook paper, bridges the everyday with the artistic—turning a fleeting scene into a lasting reflection.
To sketch is to relive. The boat encountered on the way to and from Ganghwa Island was not just part of the scenery, but a quiet comfort during a journey of remembrance—for your father’s 10th anniversary and your mother’s first. It became a gentle companion in grief, a still point in motion.
지난 2023년 5월, 아버님 10주기와 어머님 1주기를 맞아 한국을 방문했다. 그때 오랫동안 알고 지내온 윤/양 선교사님을 만나 함께 드라이브를 했다. 강화도를 오가는 길에 들른 대명항에서, 고즈넉하게 육지로 올라와 쉬고 있는 배를 사진으로 담았고, 그 사진을 스케치로 남겼다.
대명항에서 육지로 올라와 고요히 쉬고 있는 배를 담은 이 스케치는, 단순한 기록을 넘어선 감정의 흔적이다. 사진이 순간을 정확히 포착한다면, 스케치는 그 순간을 마음속에서 다시 되새기고, 손끝으로 해석해낸다.
펜 선 하나하나에 담긴 떨림은, 그날의 바람과 물결, 그리고 마음속의 울림을 함께 담아낸다. 배의 이름 ‘성복’이 선명히 보이는 이 장면은, 단지 정박한 배가 아니라, 삶의 항해를 마치고 잠시 숨을 고르는 존재처럼 느껴진다.
사진은 ‘보는 것’을 중심에 두지만, 스케치는 ‘느끼는 것’을 중심에 둔다. 사진은 빛과 색으로 사실을 말하고, 스케치는 선과 여백으로 기억을 말한다. 특히 이 스케치는 줄이 있는 노트 위에 그려졌기에, 일상의 기록과 예술적 감상이 자연스럽게 맞닿아 있다.
스케치를 남긴다는 것은, 그 순간을 다시 살아내는 일이다. 강화도를 오가는 길에 마주한 이 배는, 단순한 풍경이 아니라, 부모님을 기리는 여정 속에서 만난 조용한 위로였을지도 모른다.
