Famous tourist destinations often come with a sense of déjà vu.
Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Ala Moana…
We’ve seen them so many times in photos and videos that when we finally arrive, the real surprise is how unfamiliar everything feels.
“Wait, what is this?”
“Why is everything so stunning?”
“This is beautiful. That is beautiful…”
Even the iconic Waikiki shoreline, seen countless times before, strikes the heart anew—surrounded by unexpected, vivid impressions.
What moved me most in Hawaii were the trees.
Towering palms reaching for the sky, and the grand, sheltering monkeypod trees.
Especially the monkeypod—its majestic presence completely stole my heart.
Standing beneath its vast canopy, I felt embraced by Hawaii’s breath itself.
I tried to capture that feeling in a sketch.
Swaying palms, a cloudy sky, a small bridge and bench, and trees everywhere…
Though the scene is just one corner of Hawaii, in my heart, every tree lives and breathes with memory.
🌴 하와이 스케치에 부쳐 – 나무에 마음을 빼앗기다
많이 알려진 관광지는 대개 마음속에 이미 ‘가본 느낌’을 품고 있다. 와이키키 해변, 다이아몬드 헤드, 알라모아나 쇼핑센터… 수많은 사진과 영상 속 이미지가 머릿속에 자리 잡고 있어서, 막상 그곳에 도착하면 오히려 낯선 감동이 밀려온다.
“어, 이게 뭐지?”
“뭐가 이렇게 멋있지?”
“이것도 멋있고, 저것도 멋있고…”
그렇게 익숙한 풍경 속에서 생경한 아름다움이 솟아오른다. 정작 가장 많이 봤던 와이키키 해변의 모습조차, 그 무수한 생경한 풍경들 사이에서 깊은 감동으로 다가온다.
나는 특히 하와이의 나무들에 마음을 빼앗겼다.
하늘을 찌를 듯 솟은 야자수, 그리고 그늘을 넓게 드리운 자귀나무.
자귀나무의 웅장한 풍채는 내 마음을 온전히 사로잡았다.
그 나무 아래 서 있으면, 마치 하와이의 숨결이 나를 감싸는 듯했다.
그 감동을 담아, 나는 펜으로 스케치를 남겼다.
바람에 흔들리는 야자수, 구름 낀 하늘, 작은 다리와 벤치, 그리고 나무들…
그림 속 풍경은 하와이의 한 장면이지만, 내 마음속에는 그 모든 나무들이 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.
