Until my university years, I sometimes met friends who still lived in the very house where they were born.
It puzzled me, yet in truth, across centuries, most people lived and died near their birthplace.
My earliest memory dates back to October 1964, when I was two and a half, during the Tokyo Olympics.
In our house at Chojang-dong, Busan, neighbors gathered around the only television in the area.
I remember the sensation when wrestler Jang Chan-sun won Korea’s first Olympic medal after liberation.
My brother, seven at the time, was called “Engineer Park” whenever the screen flickered, and he would tap the TV until the picture returned.
That house was officially our third.
From Yeongju-dong (1) and Bosu-dong (2) to Chojang-dong (3), then to Gunsan’s KEPCO housing complex, where we moved three times, reaching the sixth house.
Later came another colonial house in Choryang (7), Yangjeong (8), Yeonsan-dong near Busan Women’s University (9), back to Yangjeong (10) and another moving in same block (11), and eventually my parents moved to Gwangmyeong-ri near Seoul (13).
Meanwhile, my siblings and I rented a place in Daesin-dong (12).
At Seongbuk Station apartments (14), I spent my middle and high school years, before moving to Mia-ri (15), near my grandfather’s land.
He had fled Pyongyang during the war, once ran a textile factory, then built and sold houses.
One of those houses became ours, and next door lived my aunt.
Each move was more than relocation.
It was a passage through time, a record of family, memory, and history woven together.

대학교 시절까지만 해도 태어난 집에서 살고 있는 친구들이 가끔 있었다.
그것이 어떻게 가능한지 의아했지만, 사실 인류의 긴 역사 속에서는 대부분의 사람들이 태어난 집이나 그 근처에서 살다 생을 마쳤을 것이다.
내 첫 기억은 만 두 살 반이던 1964년 10월, 도쿄 올림픽이었다.
부산 초장동 적산가옥의 우리 집에 동네 사람들이 모여들었고, 동네 유일한 TV 앞에서 모두가 숨죽여 경기를 지켜보았다.
레슬링의 장찬선 선수가 해방 후 첫 올림픽 메달을 따낸 순간, 그 사건은 내 생애 첫 기억으로 남았다.
형은 일곱 살이었고, 화면이 지직거릴 때마다 “박기사!”라 부르면 형이 TV를 툭툭 쳐서 다시 잘 나오게 했다.
그 집은 공식적으로 세 번째 집이었다.
영주동(1), 보수동(2)을 거쳐 초장동(3), 이후 군산 한전 사택단지에서 세 번의 이사를 더하며 여섯 번째 집까지.
부산 초량의 또 다른 적산가옥(7), 양정(8), 연산동 상가 건물(9), 다시 양정(10), 그리고 같은 블록에서 또 이사(11), 그리고 부모님은 서울 근처 시흥군 철산면 광명리(13)로.
나는 형이 당시 고3으로 졸업 때까지 작은누나와 함께 대신동(12)에서 세를 들어 살았다.
성북역 앞 아파트(14)에서 중학교와 고등학교 시절을 보내고, 미아리(15)로 옮겨 외할아버지의 터 근처에서 살았다.
그곳은 피난 시절 방직 공장을 운영하시다 사업이 부진해 땅을 떼어 집을 짓고 팔던 외할아버지의 흔적이 남아 있는 곳이었다. 옆집에는 이모가 살고 계셨다.
이사라는 단어 속에는 단순한 이동이 아니라 세월과 기억, 가족의 역사가 켜켜이 쌓여 있었다.
