Time Was Soft There by Jeremy Mercer is a memoir that captures the nine months he spent living inside the legendary Parisian bookstore Shakespeare & Company. Once a crime reporter in Canada, Mercer fled to Paris after receiving threats tied to his work. With no clear plan and very little money, he wandered the city until he stepped into the bookstore by chance. Under the guidance of its eccentric owner, George Whitman, the shop had become a haven for writers and travelers—people who stayed for free in exchange for helping around the store, reading, and writing. Mercer became one of these “Tumbleweeds,” and through the people he met there—artists, dreamers, wanderers—he slowly rediscovered purpose and direction.
After reading his memoir, I found myself seeing the bookstore in a completely new light. I had already been deeply drawn to Paris, returning again and again until my visits eventually reached seven. On my fifth trip, I finally made my way to the very bookstore Mercer described.
Shakespeare and Company had a strict rule: they would not stamp any book that wasn’t purchased there. But after a bit of pleading and playful charm, I managed to persuade them to stamp my copy anyway. What remains most vivid, however, is not the stamp itself but the damp smell of mold and the musty scent of old books that filled the shop. It felt as though decades of stories had soaked into the walls and were quietly breathing out into the narrow rooms.
The sense of refuge, the quiet companionship of books, and the lingering warmth of a literary community that Mercer described were all still present when I visited. Among all the places in Paris, nowhere else felt quite as suspended in time as that little bookstore by the Seine. And knowing that I, too, once paused within that stillness makes the memory all the more precious.

이 책을 읽고 난 뒤, 나 역시 이 서점이 단순한 공간이 아니라 누군가의 삶을 바꾸어 놓을 수 있는 장소라는 사실을 새삼 느끼게 되었다. 사실 나는 오래전부터 파리에 깊이 매료되어 몇 번이고 이 도시를 찾았고, 결국 일곱 번째 방문에 이르게 되었다. 다섯 번째 파리 여행에서 마침내 Mercer의 책에 등장하는 바로 그 서점을 직접 찾았다.
서점에서는 원칙적으로 그곳에서 구매하지 않은 책에는 스탬프를 찍어주지 않았다. 하지만 나는 한참을 징징거리며 애교를 부린 끝에 결국 스탬프를 받아냈다. 그 순간의 기쁨도 생생하지만, 무엇보다도 기억에 남는 것은 서점 안에 가득했던 축축한 곰팡내와 오래된 고서적의 묵은 향기였다. 그 냄새는 마치 수십 년의 시간이 책장 사이에 고스란히 갇혀 있다가, 문을 여는 순간 천천히 흘러나오는 듯했다.
Mercer가 서점에서 느꼈던 고독과 위안, 그리고 문학적 공동체의 온기는 내가 그곳을 찾았을 때도 그대로 살아 있었다. 파리의 수많은 장소 중에서도 이 서점만큼 시간이 멈춰 서 있는 듯한 공간은 없었다. 그리고 그 멈춘 시간 속에서 나 역시 잠시 머물렀다는 사실이, 지금도 내 기억 속에서 오래도록 따뜻하게 남아 있다.
