1997 – Forty Projects and Haedong Gumdo
To write this entry, I opened my 1997 diary. Inside the front cover, tucked into the vinyl pocket, was a single sheet listing all the projects I worked on that year. It’s been long enough that sharing it now won’t matter.

Some were small—helping for a day or two, organizing documents. Others required year‑round collaboration. I was, without exaggeration, an extremely busy section chief.
Looking at the list, I must have worked across nearly every major industry in Korea: food and beverage, electronics, semiconductors, steel, airports, livestock, apartments, construction materials, automotive parts, pharmaceuticals. A cross‑section of the entire national economy.
Even in that chaos, I cut back on drinking—three or four nights a week had become too much for my health—and I began practicing Haedong Gumdo. That story will jump forward twenty‑seven years, to 2024 in Canada, when I unexpectedly encounter Haedong Gumdo again.
Classes were held every weekday evening, Monday through Friday. I started on March 17 and continued until December 22, the day before I left for Wonju.

Thanks to this routine, I lost six kilograms—dropping from 83 kg to 77 kg. I once went to a butcher and asked him to show me a single lump of meat and fat weighing exactly six kilograms. Seeing the sheer volume of it, I was shocked—and strangely moved.
My diary that year is full of these small records: weekend trips, fishing logs (number of fish caught, size, hours spent, bait used), hand‑drawn reservoir maps with marked seating spots, business trip counts, department address lists, headquarters organization charts, promotion lists—little inserts pasted throughout.

물론 하루 이틀 일을 도와주거나 자료를 정리하는 정도의 짧은 일도 있었지만 일년 동안 내내 협력을 하거나 진행을 해야하는 일도 많았다. 그렇게 정말 정말 바쁜 박과장이었다. 프로젝트 이름을 보면 먹는거, 마시는거, 전자제품, 반도체, 철강, 공항, 쇠고기, 아파트, 공사용자재공장, 자동차부품, 제약등 우리나라 산업 전반에 걸쳐 많은 장르의 산업에서 일을 했던모양이다.
그렇게 바쁜 가운데에서도 건강상의 이상으로 일주일에 3~4번 마시던 술도 자제하고 해동검도를 시작하게되었는데, 여기 다시 27년을 뛰어넘어 2024년에 캐나다에서 다시 해동검도를 만나게 되는 이야기가 나중에 나오겠다.
월요일에서 금요일까지 저녁 시간에 매일 수업이 있었으며 3월 17일에 시작하여 12월 22일 원주에 가기 전날까지:

이로 인해 몸무게를 83 키로에서 77키로로 6키로를 빼고난 후 정육점에 가서 6키로 상당의 고기와 비계가 섞인 덩어리를 하나 보여 달라고 했는데, 이를 보고는 엄청 놀라고 감동을 했다는 뒷이야기가 있다.
이번 해 다이어리는 이런 자잘한 기록 이외, 주말에 여행한 기록, 낚시 (횟수, 잡은 고기의 마리 수와 크기, 몇 시간 동안 낚시를 했는지, 미끼는 뭐를 썼는지 같은 정보도 기록이 되어있으며, 저수지의 약도와 앉은 자리표시 포함)출장 횟수, 부서원 주소록, 본부 조직도, 진급자 명단 같은 간지도 붙여져 있다.
