A long time ago, while serving as a Military Police officer at the ROK Air Force Headquarters in Korea, I worked as an orderly for a field-grade officer. Since a large part of my daily routine involved waiting for phone calls, I often had a lot of downtime.
One day, a signalman came by the office to work with colorful field wires. The variety of colors was so striking that I asked for some scraps and started making little objects with them; that was the very beginning of my wire craftsmanship.
I had forgotten about it for a long time after that. However, while preparing for a mission trip to Paraguay, I needed to make stands for group signs on the tables. I used some aluminum wire I happened to have at home, and that project became the catalyst for me to pick up this craft once again.
오래전, 한국 공군본부에서 헌병으로 복무하던 시절의 이야기입니다. 당시 저는 한 영관급 장교의 당번병으로 근무했습니다. 일상의 대부분은 전화벨이 울리기를 기다리는 것이었기에, 저에게는 유독 무료한 시간이 많았습니다.
그러던 어느 날, 통신병이 사무실에 들러 형형색색의 삐삐선(통신선)을 가지고 작업을 하는 모습을 보게 되었습니다. 그 색깔들이 어찌나 다양하고 눈에 띄던지, 저는 호기심에 자투리 선들을 조금 얻어 이것저것 만들어 보았습니다. 그것이 제 철사 공예의 소박한 시작이었습니다.
제대 후, 아주 오랫동안 그 기억을 잊고 지냈습니다. 그러다 파라과이 선교를 준비하던 중, 우연한 계기로 다시 철사를 잡게 되었습니다. 각 테이블에 놓을 조별 표시판 받침대가 필요했는데, 마침 집에 있던 알루미늄 철사가 눈에 들어온 것입니다. 그렇게 무심코 다시 시작한 손놀림이, 멈춰있던 제 공예의 맥을 다시 잇게 해주었습니다.
